The Kombumerri-NgarangWal, known as the Saltwater People, are an indigenous group on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. They are pursuing a land claim where they plan to establish a casino in an attempt to be self-sufficient.

The approach adopted by this tribe at the Gold Coast mirrors initiatives by North American tribes like the Cherokee who operate multiple casinos on their lands. Among these are the Ak-Chin Casino in Arizona, Cherokee Casino in North Carolina, and the Prairie Band Casino in Kansas.

However, embarking on a similar path of commercialization will be a challenging affair for the Kombumerri-NgarangWal, as the Star Entertainment Group holds an exclusive casino license for the Gold Coast.

The tribe insists they have rights over The Spit, which marks the northmost point of the iconic Gold Coast stretch. This locale is where they aspire to launch a second casino in the region.

David Dillon and Anthony Dillon have formally put forth the claims on behalf of traditional families. About these assertions, David Dillon remarks: 'For too long, commercial uses of our traditional lands have been neglected. Now, it's time for us to carve our destiny and be active participants. Our aim is to guarantee the enduring bond between our people and our land. The days of subjugation and marginalization are behind us. As a community, we've progressed from past poverty through this renaissance of asserting control over our future by embracing self-governance and foregrounding a 'Success by Design' ideology. The Saltwater People are inclusive, welcoming all with genuine ties but refusing to tolerate the divisive and misleading actions of outsiders that disrupt our unity and progress. Our 'indigenomics' strategy, heavily reliant on principles of self-determination and collective well-being, is fundamental to us.'
